The recent go-ahead to develop the Rosebank field, West of Shetlands, has led to a wave of publicity mainly related to the question whether or not the government should allow new field developments on the UK Continental Shelf in the first place. The geology of the area has not been discussed at all, whilst it is the geology that caused the decision to develop this 300 MMBoe discovery to be delayed for a long time. That’s why we have invited Prof. Nick Schofield from Aberdeen University to come and talk about the geology of the Corona Ridge in general and Rosebank in particular. Nick will show that it is the unique geology of Rosebank, a combination of volcanic and siliciclastic rocks, that has brought challenges to de-risking the field’s volumes.
