Aberdeen Energy Talks (GESGB) on Geology of Rosebank Development

Date & Time: 28 November 2023 / 12-2pm
Venue: Atholl Hotel, Aberdeen

The recent go-ahead to develop the Rosebank field, West of Shetlands, has led to a wave of publicity mainly related to the question whether or not the government should allow new field developments on the UK Continental Shelf in the first place. The geology of the area has not been discussed at all, whilst it is the geology that caused the decision to develop this 300 MMBoe discovery to be delayed for a long time. That’s why we have invited Prof. Nick Schofield from Aberdeen University to come and talk about the geology of the Corona Ridge in general and Rosebank in particular. Nick will show that it is the unique geology of Rosebank, a combination of volcanic and siliciclastic rocks, that has brought challenges to de-risking the field’s volumes.

Aberdeen Geological Society Fieldtrip to St Andrews East Beach (to Kinkell Ness) on 19/08/23

Excellent fieldtrip to St Andrews E Beach (to Kinkell Ness) with Aberdeen Geological Society on Saturday 19th August. Many thanks to leaders Simon Allerton and Angus Miller.
Carboniferous sedimentary rocks deposited in river deltas with occasional marine incursions, folds related to compression associated with dextral strike slip faulting and a complex volcanic vent.

Core viewing of Goldeneye wells during EGS conference mid-May 2023

Many thanks to Shell UK Ltd (Julie Coughtrie and Dr Gwilym Lynn) for presenting core from 14/29A-5 and 20/4B-7 in Lower Cretaceous sands, Goldeneye Field, Outer Moray Firth (UK). The turbiditic Captain sandstone is the target storage reservoir for C02 injection in the Acorn CCS project.
Also, many thanks to Chris Stevens and colleagues at Oasis Group who hosted the workshop on the 19th May and looked after us very well.
This was the last workshop of the Energy Geoscience Conference 2023 (Aberdeen, UK).

Devex Fieldtrip to Angus Coast 19 June 2023

Many thanks to Steve Adams and Craig Lindsay for leading the Devex (https://lnkd.in/evc7kSRz) fieldtrip to the Angus coast (East Scotland, UK). Many thanks also to Suzanne Robertson and colleagues for organising the trip.
The unconformity at Whiting Ness is one of the best (and most accessible) examples of an angular unconformity in the UK. The Devonian (ORS) sandstones are also host to a wide variety of sedimentary structures and faults/fractures.

Devex fieldtrip to Angus Coast, 19/06/23

This trip (as part of the annual Devex conference) will be a full day outing to the Devonian continental clastics of the Angus Coast, UK.

The trip is an excellent opportunity to study ‘red bed’ reservoir architecture and heterogeneity, to examine non-marine seal rocks, and to develop a deeper understanding of the impact faults and fractures can have on fluid flow in these reservoir types; all of which are key to both hydrocarbon field development and carbon storage projects.
